by Brad Brittain

[Table of Contents] [Index]

1.   MARTHA ANN CLAXTON [Sources]

The first child of David Claxton and Rosanna Moore:

Born:  30 Jan 1827 in Bedford Co., TN
Died:  5 Feb 1907 <most likely in Falls Co., TX>
Buried:  Barclay Cemetery, Barclay Community, Falls Co., TX Martha's Stone Family Plot
Married:(1)Alfred A. Knott about 1848
Born:  About 1828 in TN
Died:  After 1850
Buried:  Unknown

(2)Robert Weakley Locke 25 Feb 1862
Born:  1 Mar 1813 in Bedford Co., TN
Died:  4 Aug 1883 <most likely Bedford Co., TN>
Buried: Locke Cemetery, Unionville, Bedford Co., TN

Martha Ann’s first marriage was to Alfred A. Knott about 1848 based on the age of their first child.  Alfred and Martha Ann had three children:

1.  Martha Jane Knott – about 1849
2.  Mary Knott – about 1850
3.  Unknown Knott

In 1850 Alfred, Martha Ann, and daughter, Martha Jane, lived next door to Rosanna Claxton in Shelbyville, Bedford Co., TN.  According to the 1850 Bedford Co., TN census, Alfred was 22 making his birth about 1828 and Martha Jane was one year old making her birth about 1849.  In 1860 Martha Ann was living with her mother, Rosanna, without Alfred and Martha Jane.  There is a second daughter, Mary, born about 1850 living in the household. On a list of old family notes written by Ivy Rhodes Van Dyck (Martha Ann’s granddaughter) the following was stated:

"Martha Ann Claxton was Alice’s mother.  She had 3 children by Alfred A. Knott.  I don’t think these children left heirs. I won’t carry the Knott line further."

Note:  These notes were collected by Annie Story Rhodes and shared with me by Vinita Williams, a granddaughter of Alice Genora Locke.

As of this writing, information on Alfred, his parents and the children has not been found.

Martha Ann’s second marriage was to Robert Weakley Locke 25 Feb 1862 Bedford Co.  This was also a second marriage for Robert.  His first marriage was to Tabitha Elizabeth Brown and from this marriage there were 11 children.  The parents of Robert were William Locke (born 16 Aug 1778 in NC and died 22 May 1823), and, Martha “Patsey” Carothers (born 15 Apr 1787 in VA, died 1871).  Both were buried in the Locke Cemetery in Unionville, Bedford Co., TN.  According to Locke researchers, this Locke line most likely includes General Matthew Locke who was born in Northern Ireland in the 1700s and was a Revolutionary War leader and a member of the Continental Congress.

Included in the family notes collected by Annie Story Rhodes, in Alice’s handwriting, the following was stated about her father:

"Robert Weakley Locke was Born March the 1st 1813 and Departed this life August 4 - 1883 age 70 years 5 months and 3 days."

Martha and Robert’s three children:

4.  Margaret Rosanna Locke   1862-1946
5.  George Washington Locke   1867-1939
6.  Alice Genora Locke   1870-1957

The 1870 Bedford Co. census shows Robert, Martha, their three children, and Mary Knott working a farm in the 11th Civil District. In 1880 they are living in the 8th Civil District northwest of Shelbyville.

According to family sources Martha moved to Milam Co., TX around 1885 along with her three children Margaret, George, and Alice, to be near her brother Jonathan “John” Claxton.  It was discovered, however, that Martha did move to Texas around 1885 with George and Alice, but, daughter Margaret remained in Bedford Co., TN with her husband and family. Birth records show Margaret’s second child was born in Shelbyville, Bedford Co., TN in January 1886.  Margaret’s obituary states that she moved to Texas in 1888. Her third child was born in Texas in July 1889.  The 1900 census records show Martha living with her daughter, Alice and family in Milam Co., TX.

Martha Ann was buried in a family plot in the Barclay Cemetery located in a small farm community in the far southwest corner of Falls Co., TX.  Also buried in Martha’s plot were her daughter, Margaret, and her husband James McElwrath plus three of their children: Joseph and wife Rosa, Alice, and Thomas.

Margaret and James married in Bedford Co., TN in 1880 and had their first two children there in 1882 and 1886.  They moved to TX in 1888.  Family sources state that Margaret and James first lived to Falls Co., TX and then moved to Milam Co.  The majority of their lives were spent farming in the southern part of Falls Co. and in the northern area of Milam Co. Records at Falls Co., TX show Margaret’s middle name as Rosanna, most likely for her grandmother Rosanna Claxton. Family members in Texas called her “Aunt Mag”.  James’ parents are believed to be Thomas McElwrath and Margaret Anne Russell of TN. The 1910 Milam Co., TX census shows the family living on Clarkson Rd. in Cameron and eight of their nine children were living in the home.  The 1920 and 1930 census shows James and Margaret farming in northern Milam Co. on Ben Arnold Rd.  James died in 1935 in Falls Co. and Margaret died in 1946 in Cameron.  Both were buried in The Barclay Cemetery in Falls Co. next to Martha.

Cameron Herald (Milam Co., TX) Thursday, 3 Dec 1914 (p. 3)
Fatal Elecrical Storms
Unusual reports are made this week of deaths and injuries by lightning during the storm sweeping over the country Tuesday, especially between Burlington and Ben Arnold. The wife of Tom Archer near Ben Arnold was instantly killed; the stroke killing also his two mules, while he himself was seriously injured.  On the Dalton Farm near Burlington a young boy, Monroe Lawrence, was hurrying in on his horse from the field, when a stroke killed him and the horse. On the Waters Ranch a fine cow was another victim of lightning while being milked by a young boy, the latter however was not injured. Other reports about Chilton Chilton [sic] give several deaths also two among negroes while attending the cattle of the farms. The several families afflicted with these shocking bereavements truly have the sympathy of the surrounding community.

"Ben Arnold, Texas
Dec. 1, 1914

Dear Aunt,
It is with great saddness that I now break the news to you of the death of Ida Locke Archer. She was struck by lightning this morning and we received the message that she was dead. Lena, Charlie, Alice, and Jodie left immediately for her home and we heard this evening that Francis was unconscious and not expected to live.
They had a school teacher boarding with them that was left to break the news to their neighbors.
Wednesday
We had another message this morning stating that Francis was better and they were ready to start with Ida to Yarrellton and they were going to tell him of her death before leaving. Papa, Homer, and Dewey went to the cemetery.  Johnnie also went to Rosebud last night and then to Francis.
We sure are lonely we wanted to go but the roads are terrible.  Mamma said tell you that our cow did die.
Lovingly your niece
Era"
