ABRAHAM
CLAXTON [Sources]
The
second child of David Claxton and Rosanna Moore:
Born:
About 1828 in Gallatin Co., IL
Died:
1865 in Bedford Co., TN
Buried:
< Crowell Chapel Cemetery, Halls Mill, Bedford Co., TN>
Married:
Sarah Margaret Parsons in 1850
Born:
17 Dec 1832 in TN
Died:
2 Sep 1888 Fall Creek, Bedford Co., TN
Buried:
<Crowell Chapel Cemetery, Halls Mill, Bedford Co., TN>
According
to the 1830 Gallatin Co., IL census records, David and Rosanna Claxton
were living south of Shawneetown, IL in the Cave-in-Rock Township on
the Ohio River. They lived there only a short period time since
records show them back in Bedford Co., TN in December 1831. It
is believed that Abraham was born in this area of Cave-in-Rock, IL.
Today, the area is a State Park in Hardin Co. and part of the Shawnee
National Forest. According to Marvin Claxton, the Abraham
Claxton family Bible has his birth in Gallatin Co., TN. (actually
IL). Census records indicate Abraham spent the rest of his life
in Bedford Co. He was listed on the 1850 Bedford Co., TN census
as “Alan” (misspelling of Abram) living with his mother,
Rosanna.
In
1850, Abraham married Margaret Parsons. Margaret was the
daughter of George Washington Parsons and Margaret “Peggy”
Fisher. George was born 27 Dec 1787 in VA and died 16 Nov 1842 in
Bedford Co. "Peggy" was born 23 Jul 1793, Rowan Co,
NC and died 26 Apr 1854 in Bedford Co. Both of her parents were
buried in the Old Crowell Chapel Cemetery in Halls Mill, Bedford Co.
Abraham
and Margaret had seven children, four daughters and three sons:
1.
William Harvey Claxton
1852 - 1921
2.
Arena E. Claxton 1853 - 1951
3.
Margaret Ann Claxton 1855
- 1899
4.
Palistine “Tiny” Claxton
1856 - 1881
5.
George Washington Claxton
1858 - 1952
6.
Genoa Alice Claxton 1861
- 1920
7.
John Albert Claxton 1864 -
1940
In
1860, Abraham, Margaret, and five of their seven children were living
in Shelbyville, Western Division of the 7th Civil District
next door to Rosanna and her children. Abraham was a
blacksmith. Sometime in the 1860s, Abraham and his family moved
to the Halls Mill/Fall Creek (8th Civil District)
community northwest of Shelbyville along with Abraham’s
brother, William H., and their mother Rosanna.
According
to Marvin Claxton from "Descendants of David Claxton":
“Abraham
was killed in 1865 during the Civil War. My father, Murry
Claxton said that he had been to town to sell some mules and was
killed by some men that robbed him of his money. This happened on the
Old Unionville Pike in the vicinity of the present El Bethel Baptist
Church.”
Margaret
was left with seven children to raise and she never remarried.
In
July 1870, Margaret was living next door to Rosanna and continued to
work the farm with her seven children. As mentioned before,
this was the last known record of Rosanna. In 1880, Margaret
was still on the farm with her children except for a daughter,
“Tiny”, who died in 1881. Margaret died in 1888.
In 1900 the oldest son, William H., was the head of household with
his sisters, Arena and Genoa, living in the home. Family
sources believe Abraham and Margaret were buried in one of the two
Crowell Chapel Cemeteries at Halls Mill without markers where all of
their seven children were buried.

Mrs.
Abram Claxton of Fall Creek died last Sunday.
Abraham
and Margaret’s children lived all their lives in the Halls
Mill/Fall Creek area with the exception of John Albert who moved to
Nashville in the 1920s. Their four daughters never married and
lived on the farm with their mother, and, after her death, with their
brothers.

The

Mr.
Robert Hayes Claxton was drowned in Duck River Wednesday afternoon at
a point on the Frazier farm about four miles and a half West of
Shelbyville. Mr. Claxton in company with his brother (Cousin)
from Nashville and the two little sons of the latter had gone with
the boys to the river and the two boys were in the water when one of
them was noticed to be struggling in the water beyond his depth and
the uncle (Cousin)
jumped in to save him.
The boy had been rescued when he himself sank and did not rise again,
supposed to have been seized with cramps. The body was recovered
later on in the evening about a hundred yards below where the
drowning occurred.
Mr.
Claxton was between 30 and 35 years of age and leaves a wife and
three (four) children
to mourn his untimely death. He was buried in the Thompson (Crowell's

for the drowning, yes it was my grandfather's (Papa) 2nd cousin,
William Howard Claxton (son of John Albert Claxton). The two boys
were Leland who was 13 at the time, and Neeley who was 6 at the time
(sons of William Howard). I cannot remember which one of them it was
