James was listed as a male child under 2 years of age on the 1840 Bedford Co., TN census.  As of 30 Aug 1850, James, age 11, was living with his mother Rosanna in the 8th Civil District of Bedford Co. James’ oldest brother, Abraham, was supporting the family as a blacksmith. Jonathan, 13, William, 9, and Emaline, 7, were also living in the household.

As of 7 Jun 1860, James, age 22, and his brother, William H., age 19, were supporting the household as laborers in the Western Division, District 7 of Bedford Co. Later that year James married Cynthia Ann Cleek on 20 Nov 1860 in Marshall Co., TN.

Cynthia was born 31 Dec 1839 in Marshall Co. and was from a family of at least 13 children. Cynthia’s parents were William Cleek and Eva Margaret Harber.  William Cleek was born about 1804 in TN and died in 1870 in Marshall Co., TN.  Eva Margaret Harber was born about 1810 in Barnell District, SC and died sometime between 1853-1860 in Marshall Co., TN.  Her parents were most likely buried on the Cleek farm without markers.
(Note:  Some records show Cynthia’s birth date as 31 Oct 1839.  Her headstone indicates 31 Dec 1839).

James and Cynthia lived in eastern Marshall Co., TN in the Rich Creek, 7th District near the Bedford Co. line west of Shelbyville.  Records indicate that they lived on the Cleek farm located about a mile west of the Bedford Co. line on the north side of Mt. Lebanon Rd.  James farmed here for at least 20 years.  In Aug 1870, census records show James with $1300 of personal property and owning no real estate.  Living in the next two households were Elizabeth Cleek, $1700 of real estate, and, William Cleek, Cynthia’s father, with $4,000 in real estate.  An 1899 map of the Rich Creek, 7th District of Marshall Co. shows land in this area owned by E.E. Cleek.  As of the 1 June 1880 census, James and Cynthia were still on the farm with 8 children, ages 2-16.  Less than three months later, Cynthia died, most likely at home.

James and Cynthia had 10 children with 8 living to adulthood.  According to family sources, their tenth child died at birth and Cynthia died four days later on 22 Aug 1880 at the age of 40.  Cynthia and Baby Claxton were buried on the farm, which is now called the Carlton-Claxton Cemetery.  The cemetery is on private property and no longer in use.

The following is a letter from Dorothy Fisher Sadler, a great-granddaughter:

Cynthia is buried in the 7 district of Marshall County, her grave is the only one that has a headstone, but there are several other graves there, you can tell by that sunken in places. The road that was in front of the house has been destroyed, but you can still see where the road was. We visited Cynthia's grave with my mother and daddy about the year 1965 and the road and house were still there.  It was a real old two story house with a chimney on both ends. The last time we were there a Mr. Phizer lived there, the house he lived in was about a fourth of a mile off the main road and the graveyard is about a mile behind his house beside a large hay field.  You can still see where the old house was, by two piles of chimney rocks. I don't know if it was Cynthia and James J.’s  farm or the Cleek  farm.

According to Marvin Claxton, the tombstone was placed at Cynthia’s grave by Everette Trollinger (son-in-law) and Murry Claxton (son of James J. and Evie). [Return to James J. and Cynthia]

Tennessee Death Records 1908-1958, Roll #171 (Ancestry.com)
James J. Claxton died 9 Mar 1924 at his home (Route 11), Farmington, Marshall Co., TN, at the age of 85. The informant was his son Murry Grady Claxton. Obviously, the parents of James were never discussed in the family. Murry names John Claxton as the father and the mother was unknown. He was possibly thinking of John Claxton Sr., the grandfather. James was buried in the Stallings Cemetery in Bedford Co., not Claxton Cemetery.

James and Cynthia's children:

 1.  William H. Claxton   1861 - young
 2.  Alice H. Claxton   1863 - 1955
 3.  Nancy Ann Claxton   1865 - 1939
 4.  James Abram Claxton   1867 - 1903

 9.  Ida Elizabeth Claxton   1877 - 1965
10. Baby Claxton   1880 - 1880

After the death of Cynthia, James married Everline “Evie” D. May, 21 Sep 1881 in Marshall Co.  Evie was the daughter of Thomas J. May and Sarah R. King from Rutherford Co., TN.  Thomas was born about 1819 and died before 1870.  Sarah was born about 1818 and died before 1880.  Both were most likely buried in the Carlton-Claxton Cemetery since they owned land and lived in the area.  Evie was from a family of at least 8 children.  Robert B. May, Evie’s brother, was shown as owning land near the Cleek’s farm in 1899.

Evie came into the household of 8 children to help raise, plus, she and James  had an additional 6 children within the next 10 years.   When James married Evie, he and the children left the Cleek farm in Marshall Co. and moved to Bedford Co.  Records show that James and Evie’s  first two children were born in Bedford Co. in 1882 and 1884.  James moved several times between Bedford and Marshall Co. In the mid 1880s, James and his family lived near Lewisburg, Marshall Co., TN where at least two children were born in 1887 and 1889.  In Jan 1892, James and Evie were back in Bedford Co. farming in the Palmetto-Sims Spring area.

Evie died 6 Sep 1899 in <Bedford Co.> and was buried in the Stallings Cemetery in Bedford Co. just inside the county line on Laws Hill Rd.  In June 1900, James was living in Sims Spring,  18th Civil District of Bedford Co. about 4 miles east of the county line.  He was shown married to Laura for less than a year and five of Evie’s children were in the home, ages 8-16.

James and Evie’s six children:

11.  Sallie May Claxton   1882 - 1958

13.  Dennie Montgomery Claxton - 1885 - 1958
14.  Carrie Emma Claxton   1887 - 1909
15.  Harry Thomas Claxton   1889 - 1961
16.  Samuel Clayton Claxton   1892 - 1961

James married Laura Lawrence in early 1900 most likely in Bedford Co.  Prior to 1910, James and Laura moved to Civil District 2 in Marshall Co. and lived on Verona Rd.  Also in the home were son, Samuel, and, daughter, Sallie Yoes, with her children.  In Jan 1920, James and Laura were still living on Verona Rd. in Marshall Co.  James died 8 Mar 1924 at the age of 85 and Laura died 8 Sep 1926.  Both were buried in the Stallings Cemetery beside Evie.  James and Laura had no children.

It is also interesting to note that Alice and Harvey’s sister, Nancy Ann “Nannie” Claxton and her husband William Nicholas, also lived in Aberdeen in 1910 as well as a half brother, Harry Thomas Claxton .

George was a very successful livestock dealer in Aberdeen.  He operated a large livery selling thousands of horses and mules to buyers in the area.  George and Alice also owned one of Aberdeen’s leading hotels, the Pickle House.  Alice operated the Pickle House for many years.  Their son, Murry, was the last member of the family to live in the Pickle House and upon his death the hotel was sold.

MRS. J. H. CROW
Many friends will regret to hear of the death of Mrs. J. H. Crow, who passed away at the Monroe County Clinic on Dec. 6th , 1950, after only a few days illness.  Mrs. Crow was born Miss Eva Pickle, daughter of the late George W. and Mrs. Pickle.  Her parents were natives of Tennessee, but came to Aberdeen many years ago.  Mr. Pickle conducted a large sales and livery barn, selling thousands of horses and mules to farmers in this section.  Mrs. Pickle, for many years, conducted one of Aberdeen’s leading hotels, the Pickle House, located on the lot just east of the Baptist Church, where the Shell oil station was located.  A number of years ago, Miss Eva married Mr. J. H. Crow, Aberdeen business man, who passed away some years ago.  The death was a particularly sad one for the aged mother, and was most unexpected and a great shock to our city.
Funeral services were held from the Lann & Carter funeral home Dec. 7th , at 11 o’clock, conducted by Dr. J. M. Walker, Baptist pastor for many years, where members of the family worshipped, before death had entered the home.  Mrs. Crow is survived by her mother,  Mrs. George Pickle, and two brothers, James Murry and William Pickle.
Pallbearers:  Tom Walling, Clarence Walters, Mark McDearman, Nick Dinas, Herman Eikner, and Joe Bradley.

I was told by my grandfather, Ben Claxton, that James was called “Abe” by all who knew him.  Another time I was told that James was called “Jack”.  I have come to the conclusion that he was called Jack by family members only to identify him from his cousin of the same name, James Abram “Abe” Claxton, son of William H. Claxton, who moved from TN to Milam Co., TX about the same time.

My great-grandfather, James, moved to Milam Co. in the early 1890s and most likely in the beginning he was a sharecropper.  His uncle, Jonathan Claxton, had moved there in 1871 and owned several farms.  James married “Genia” Campbell there in 1892.  Genia’s parents were David Chambers Campbell and Mary Ann Elizabeth “Mollie” Jackson who owned a family farm near Buckholts in the Yarrellton community of Milam Co.  David was born 2 Aug 1848 in Travis, Falls Co., TX and died 29 Mar 1927 in Milam Co.  Mollie was born 21 Sep 1847 in Florence, AL and died 28 Mar 1933 in Milam Co.  David and Mollie were buried in the North Elm Cemetery in Yarrellton, north of Cameron, TX.

Note: David Chambers Campbell's father (Genia's grandfather) was Rufus Easton Campbell.  Rufus and four of his brothers participated in the Texas War of Independence and all were in General Sam Houston's army in the battle of San Jacinto.  Their names are inscribed on the Honor Roll at the San Jacinto Monument.  Rufus made the leg irons used on Santa Anna.  He is now buried in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, TX.

In 1900, James, Genia, and all six of their children were living in McGregor, McLennan Co., TX.  He was listed as working for the railroad.  In 1901, James and Genia lost their young daughter Eva May.  Where she was buried is unknown, but most likely she was buried someplace in McGregor, TX or with her grandparents in the North Elm Cemetery.  According to Genia Claxton’s family Bible, James died 14 Jan 1903 at the age of 35.  According to family stories, he was run over by horses and a wagon on a city street.  My mother’s notes indicate he died in Fort Worth, Tarrant Co., TX.  The following newspaper ad was found:

Fort Worth Telegram, Fort Worth, TX, 15 Jan 1903

J.A. CLAXTON IS DEAD
J. A. Claxton, age 38, died this morning at his home in Glenwood.  The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock.  The deceased was a railroad contractor and leaves a wife and six children.

(Note:  Glenwood was a neighborhood located southeast of downtown Fort Worth.  The only landmark found today by that name is Glenwood Park.)

After the death of James, Genia, with the five children, lived with her parents on the Campbell farm in Yarrellton, Milam Co., TX.  Prior to 1920, the oldest son David “Dave” enlisted into the Army during WW I, Ben moved to Fisher Co. in West Texas, and, two daughters had married.  The third daughter, Lillie, married in 1922.  According to family, Genia left her parents’ home and moved to Fisher Co in 1919 to be near her two sons.  She lived the rest of her life in Rotan, Fisher Co. until she died at the age of 80.

Hollis Post Herald, Hollis, Harmon Co., OK, March 10, 1925
DR. S. L. BEAVERS TAKES OWN LIFE WITH SHOTGUN
The people of Hollis and Harmon County were shocked last Saturday morning to hear that Dr. S. L. Beavers had died earlier that morning as a result of a gunshot wound inflected [sic] by his own hands. The doctor had been a sufferer from Brights disease and heart trouble for some time, and the last few months has been very low.  He was recently taken to Mineral Wells in the hope that he could get relief, and it was reported at the time that he had died.  It developed  that relatives had started home with the doctor and that they became alarmed and thought that he might die before he reached home.  After arriving in Hollis Dr. Beavers appeared to get slightly better and hopes were entertained that his life may be prolonged for a long time yet.  Just on Thursday preceding his tragic death, a reporter for the Post-Herald had talked to Mrs. Beavers and she said that she believed the doctor was slightly better.

Planned Self Destruction

It was evident that Dr. Beavers had planned to take his own life.  Mrs. Beavers states that she discovered him searching in bureau drawers where it had been customary to have a revolver, but the weapon had been removed.  Henry Shoemake had borrowed an automatic shot gun,  and returned it on Thursday.  The gun had been placed on the back porch.  Mrs. Beavers states that the doctor had been very restless Friday night and that she had been up with him as late as 1:30 AM Saturday morning.  He had quieted down and said that he would try to go sleep.  Mrs. Beavers was tired and worn from her long wraths of vigil,  went to sleep, and was awakened by the doctor calling her name.  She raised up and observed that he was not in bed, and answered the call, and almost instantly came the report of the shotgun.  Mrs. Beavers rushed out on the back porch and found her husband lying prone upon the porch, his head resting on his right arm, the left arm across the face and the gun between his legs.  The muzzle had been placed directly over his heart, and the trigger must have been pulled with his toes.  The entire charge entered his chest, making a hole two or three inches across and tearing the heart to pieces.  Death came instantly, no move or murmur being made from the time the fatal shot was fired.  Friends and neighbors were immediately notified and following the inquest at 9 AM o’clock Saturday, the body was tenderly cared for and prepared for burial.  Relatives were notified by wire and telephone and the funeral services were held Sunday afternoon.

Large and Impressive Funeral

The funeral was held at the home on East Broadway.  Dr. Beavers having requested something previous to taking his life that the funeral should be held there should he die.  Services were in charge of Dr. E. R. Brown of the Baptist Church, to which church Dr. Beavers belonged.  Rev. W. J. Johnson assisted with the services and attorney R. D. Miller spoke, which had also been one of Dr. Beavers last request.  Following the services a long and impressive funeral procession followed the remains to its last resting-place in Fairmount Cemetery, being laid away beside his first wife, who died a number of years ago.  Wreaths and cut flowers completely covered the grave.
Samuel L. Beavers was born at Shelbyville, Tennessee, December 17, 1868.  On December 18, 1888, he was married to Janie Claxton, and to them six children were born, all of whom are living.  The children are two sons, Ollie of Wichita Falls, and George of Hydro.  The daughters are Mrs. Annie Gregory of Dallas, Mrs. E. F. Seitz of Wichita Falls,  Mrs. W. E. Austin of Altus, and Lois who is at home.  His first wife died in 1911 and he later married Miss Loula Batte, who survives him with a son, Bobbie, four years old.  There is also a sister, Mrs. Dick Crowell, of Wichita Falls and a brother, G. W. Beavers, of Holdenville, this state.
The Beavers family moved to what is now Harmon County almost 20 years ago, and for a number of years farmed near Hollis.  Later Mr. Beavers took up the study of veterinary surgery and become a practicing veterinarian.  He served the county as tax assessor in 1913-1914, and was in the drug business in Hollis for a couple of years.  At the time of his death he owned the Empress Theater building and 3 other properties here.

2.  Nell F. "Nellie" Claxton   1904 - 1959
3.  Thomas Elbert Claxton   1908 - 1981

Tiny” was the daughter of Peter Murray Pickle and Mary Ann Frances Atkisson from Marshall Co., TN.  Peter Murray was born 24 Aug 1838 and Mary Ann 23 Apr 1837, both in Farmington, Marshall Co., TN. Peter Murray and Mary Ann Pickle had at least nine children all born in TN, most likely Marshall Co. The Claxton and Pickle families stayed in close contact both in TN and in MS.
(Note:  “Tiny’s” brother, George W. Pickle, married Harvey’s sister, Alice Claxton, the second child of James J. Claxton and Cynthia Cleek).

Harvey married “Tiny” in Crockett Co., TN in 1896.  Living there at the time was “Tiny’s” brother, Major Pickle, and his family.  Their brother, Jonas H. Pickle, also married there in 1906.

Members of the Claxton and Pickle families moved from TN to Aberdeen, Monroe Co., MS in the late 1800s and early 1900s.   Peter Murray, Mary Ann, Jonas H. (son), Tiny (daughter), and Harvey Claxton moved to Aberdeen prior to 1900, according to the Monroe Co., MS census.  All were living in the same household.  Murray was a butcher and Harvey was working in a grist mill and gin.  It appears that Harvey and “Tiny” moved to Aberdeen, MS first, soon after their marriage in 1896 since their oldest child, Georgia, was born in Aberdeen in 1897.  Mary Ann Pickle died 3 Jun 1904 and was buried in the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery back in Marshall Co., TN.  Murray died 31 May 1911 in Aberdeen and was buried in the Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Aberdeen in the plot with Harvey, Tiny, and other members of the Pickle family.

Tiny’s brother, Major Pickle, moved to Aberdeen about 1906 and another brother, George W. Pickle and wife Alice Claxton Pickle, were living in Aberdeen in 1910.  The 1910 Aberdeen, MS census also shows William J. Nicholas and wife Nancy “Nannie” Claxton Nicholas (another sister) living next door to Harvey.  Living in Harvey’s home was Harry Claxton, his half brother, son of James J. Claxton and Evie May.

Even though “Tiny” was her nickname, family sources say she was a very large lady weighing in excess of 300 lbs.  She died at the young age of 38 in 1914.

Harvey and Maggie lived on Hickory St. in Aberdeen.  In 1910 Harvey was listed as a cattle buyer, in 1920 he was the owner of a meat market, and, in 1930 he was a retail merchant of a grocery store in Aberdeen.

According to family sources, Harvey and Maggie were living in Keystone, FL and Harvey died while visiting his sister, Alice Claxton Pickle, in Aberdeen.  Harvey was buried in the Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Aberdeen and Maggie returned to TN.

(5.15)  Harry Thomas Claxton [Sibling list] [Child Image] [Sources]

The 15th child of  James J. Claxton and 5th child of  Everline “Evie” May:

Born:  4 Jul 1889 near Lewisburg, Marshall Co., TN
Died:  6 Mar 1961 in Memphis, Shelby Co., TN
Buried:  Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis, Shelby Co., TN
Married:  Eva Erie McClara  about 1917
Born:  12 Sep 1889 in IN
Died:  15 Feb 1995 in Memphis, Shelby Co., TN
Buried:  Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis

No children.

Erie was the daughter of William Albert McClara and Daisy Mae Rainbolt from IN.  William was born 29 Sep 1866 in Clark Co., IN and died 18 Jun 1944 in Memphis.  Daisy was born 9 May 1871 in IN and died four days before William on 14 Jun 1944 in Memphis.  William and Daisy were married 17 Jan 1889 in Greene Co., IN and had three daughters. William worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for over 50 years and was in charge of the railroad yards in Clarksdale, MS at the time of his retirement. All members of the McClara family were buried in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis.

Marvin Claxton listed Harry as Benjamin Harrison Claxton, but I have been unable to find any source for this name.  The first record on Harry was the 1900 Marshall Co., TN census where he was listed as Harry, 10 years of age, living with his parents. If his name was changed it was at a very young age, and, by his parents.

In 1910 Harry, single, age 20, was living with his brother Harvey Andrew Claxton in Aberdeen, Monroe Co., MS.  It’s not certain if Harry and Erie married in MS or TN, but both were living in Memphis prior to 1920. Records show Harry and Erie, married, and living in Memphis in June 1917.  Harry spent the rest of his life in Memphis where he was the owner and operator of the Claxton Dry Cleaners.  After the death of Harry, Erie lived another 34 years and died at the age of 106.

Services for Harry Thomas Claxton of 4032 Airways, who owned and operated Claxton Cleaners for many years until his retirement in 1944, will be held at 2 tomorrow afternoon at Cosmopolitan Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Memorial Park.  Mr. Claxton died at 6 a.m. yesterday at Methodist Hospital.  Born and reared in Lewisburg, Tenn., Mr. Claxton moved to Memphis in 1933.  He was member of First Baptist Church and former member of the Optimist Club.  He leaves his wife Mrs. Erie McClara Claxton and two brothers, Sam Clayton Claxton of Nashville and Murray [sic] Claxton of Shelbyville, Tenn.

(Note:  Harry and Erie were living in Memphis, Shelby Co., TN on the 1920 census as mentioned above.  The 1930 Shelby Co. census shows 10 years of marriage.)

My special thanks to James VanDerMark who shared his information on the McClara family.
