CHARLEY & ELLER ADAMS

My grandad Charlie ADAMS in 1901.
Married Eller CLAXTON and their life begun.
They cut themselves a homestead here in these Ozark hills.
They cut and cleared the timber, plowed and sowed the fields.
Eller worked beside him, whatever task he did;
The two of them together, they raised a dozen kids.
They lived in Newton County the remainder of their lives.
And Eller ADAMS was well known as the local midwife.
They raised a lot of pork and they salted down the meat;
Eller was always canning, there was plenty of food to eat.
They built themselves a cabin and filled it to the top.
With seven boys and five girls, and there they finally stopped.
There was Nancy, Claud, and Floyd, Dellar and Stella too.
Ethel, Roscoe, Oscar, next Russel came in view.
Then Cynthia, Jimmy and Willis, they were the final ones.
Their work began each morning with the break of dawn.
With chores already planned out, enough for everyone.
They raised an even dozen before their work was done.
They were a pioneer family, one of the very best;
Their name will long be carried on, for with children they were blessed.
They cut the trees, they split the rails and built their fences high;
They wash their clothes on the old rub board with soap they made from lye.
And they loved their children, they loved them every one;
They raised an even dozen before their race was won.
Arthur HOPPIS told me Charlie always would
Make a balking mule work, when nobody else could.
He was a mule skinner and a blacksmith was he;
Still he had time for Eller, even I could see
That Charlie he loved Eller, he loved her a lot,
For seven boys and five girls, that's what their loving got.
